Having grown up in the 1970’s, my young mind was blessed with television shows such as In Search Of… that featured segments on topics such as bigfoot, UFOs and historical mysteries.  One of the regularly-featured enigmas in these shows was the disappearance of Amelia Earhart in 1937 while she attempted to circumnavigate the globe in a small plane.  Her body nor the plane wreckage was ever recovered and their location remains a mystery to this day.  However, some progress has been made in this missing-persons case.  Tantalizing information has arisen in recent years, and more surfaces all the time.  Just last week I read a recent news item about some possible progress on the Earhart mystery, and when I scanned the article I was surprised to find a familiar name from bigfoot research: Jeff Glickman.

For those new to bigfooting, Jeff Glickman was the executive director of a $75k examination of the Patterson/Gimlin Film.  The study was commissioned by a group that went by the name of the North American Science Institute (NASI), though it is unclear if this group did anything else but this one study.  The study lasted for several years culminating in a 1998 publication entitled, “Toward a Resolution of the Bigfoot Phenomenon.”  An abridged version of the paper can be read by clicking this link.

Glickman’s bigfoot work came to some conclusions that even today seem unlikely (such as the mass of the film subject being 1957 pounds), but did so using well-established methods.  At the time, Glickman’s analysis was one of the best ever done on the film, and we in the bigfoot community applauded his scientific approach to the film.  Since the publication of Glickman’s report, only one analysis of the film is of the same or better caliber: When Roger Met Patty by Bill Munns (which is a must-read for anyone interested in the Patterson/Gimlin Film).

Glickman has now been enlisted by a group called The International Group for Historic Aircraft Recovery, also known by the acronym TIGHAR.  Glickman and TIGHAR are working on a hypothesis that some bones found back in 1940 might belong to Earhart.  He has recently published his findings in a short paper.

While I am less interested in the Earhart mystery than the bigfoot mystery, I find it interesting that Glickman is working on this project, and his involvement certainly brings to mind a couple questions.  If future DNA analysis concludes that the bones are indeed Earhart’s, will Glickman’s involvement in the bigfoot subject help or hurt the acceptance of his analysis?  Will the acceptance of Glickman’s work on Earhart help or hurt future acceptance of his previous bigfoot work?

It is my hope that more forensics experts like Jeff Glickman will step forward to offer their opinions on sasquatch data.  Their opinions might serve to open the minds and eyes of their colleagues, thus causing a domino effect.

The path the creature ran in the CT footage.

Bigfoot in Connecticut?  Yep, it seems to be so.  This isn’t really surprising when you consider that black bears are also in the state.

My behind-the-scenes field notes on the CT expedition have finally been published.  Click this link to read my take on the video we investigated, as well as to see never-before-published photographs of the film site and our investigation.

Scott Carpenter’s photograph

Tennessee has a long history of bigfoot encounters, and many interesting bullet points in the bigfoot history books as well. One of the very first bigfoot websites I ever encountered was Mary Green’s website on which she called herself the Tennessee Bigfoot Lady. While I have never met Mary, I have friends who have, and they speak of her in good terms. Also from Tennesse was the Janice Carter habituation case, probably the first that most bigfooters would have heard of. While many bigfooters have doubts about what both of the above women have to say, I reserve judgment for cases where I know a little bit more about the people involved than what I’ve heard through the sometimes vicious bigfoot rumor mill (being a frequent victim of this rumor mill has taught me its inaccurate nature).

The evidence that brought the Finding Bigfoot team to Tennessee was a trail camera photograph obtained by Scott Carpenter on May 29, 2012. The camera was not a motion-activated camera as is often deployed by hunters throughout North America, but rather a camera that takes one photograph every minute until the memory card is full, or the batteries die. It is rare that this kind of camera is deployed, but I think these show promise in our collective endeavor of capturing footage of sasquatches.

While watching this, remove the gorilla and insert a sasquatch.  Is this level of interaction with a bigfoot possible?  Could it be that extended video of this quality could remove the need of a type specimen (a dead one) to prove the species?  I think it’s at least possible, and certainly worth a try.

People claim to have achieved this level of interaction with bigfoots, but so far these stories are just that: stories.  I suggest that to avoid the killing of a bigfoot, people who say they have this level of interaction should produce video of this quality or better.

I’m not saying, “Put up or shut up.”  I’m saying that we should do this for them, the big guys.  There are already several groups actively pursuing the killing of a specimen.  One will eventually be successful.  Can those who take a more compassionate stance beat them to the punch?

Bigfoots are real.  The “discovery” of the species is inevitable.  Can we avoid killing one to prove they are real?  Not unless we try.

Cliff speaking at the 40th Anniversary
Celebration of the PG Film in
Willow Creek, CA

The Gifford Pinchot National Forest office has invited me to be a guest speaker at their monthly gathering entitled “Volcano Views and Brews.”  I will be doing two separate presentations next week on February 12th and February 14th.  Both are open to the public, and totally free!  It will be a small, intimate gathering of bigfooters and laymen.  Bigfoot talk will be plentiful, and so will the good beers.  Come share both with me.

Tuesday, Feb. 12
My presentation will cover some of the most compelling reasons why I believe bigfoots are a real species.  Topics will include video footage, photographs, vocalizations, and detailed analysis of footprint evidence, including the London prints.  I will bring several of the original London casts, as well as a variety of other casts from my collection.  Some specimens will be available for sale.

The details:
801 Washington St.
Vancouver, WA.
Happy Hour 3:00pm – 6:00pm,
Speaker at 6:30pm.
Thursday, Feb. 14
What better Valentines date could there be than nerding out about bigfoot stuff?  This night’s presentation will be my detailed analysis of the Clackamas River photograph.  I presented this topic last year at another informal gathering in Portland, OR.  The photograph has never been published anywhere, and will be one of the centerpieces in my upcoming DVD release, Bigfoot Road Trip (co-produced by Craig Flipy).  Spoiler alert!!!  I think the Clackamas River photograph is a real bigfoot.  Come hear how I came to this conclusion.
924 15th Avenue
Longview, WA
Speaker starts at 6:30pm.
I hope that if you live within reasonable driving distance to either of these locations, that you will consider coming out and enjoying a night of talking bigfooting.  See you there!

Cliff Barackman and Gary Bouvier

Colorado was supposed to be the last episode to be filmed on our last run at the end of June, 2012. However, there were raging wildfires throughout much of the area at that time, so we had to postpone the filming. We were able to go to the area the following September.

The evidence that brought us to Colorado was a piece of 8mm film footage that was taken in 1962. To my knowledge, this is the earliest footage that purports to show a possible bigfoot, predating the Patterson/Gimlin Film by five years. The footage is owned by Gary Bouvier, but he did not film it. His father filmed the footage while on a boy scout backpacking trip. Gary was on this trip, but he was just a 13-year-old boy at the time.

The Valles Caldera outside of Los Alamos, NM

New Mexico might be one of the last states one thinks of when considering the possibilities of bigfoot. UFO’s, sure, but bigfoot? As it turns out, New Mexico’s dry, high, forested altitudes make for excellent bigfoot habitat. Swamps, forests, meadows, rivers, and everything that goes with these exist in bountiful amounts in isolated pockets throughout the mountains of New Mexico.

Our expedition was centered around the Valles Caldera, one of the world’s six known land-based supervolcanoes. With a diameter of over 12 miles, this caldera is a sight to behold. Huge herds of elk and deer graze on the native perennial grass, and these ungulate herds maintain a healthy population of the animals that feed on them, including sasquatches.

The evidence that brought us to this part of New Mexico was a group of thermal videos of a possible bigfoot taken by Washingtonian Kirk Brandenburg while on a BFRO expedition in April of 2011. The location of the expedition was chosen based on a history of encounters doing back years.

It was seeming like a pretty slow expedition, as no sounds indicating the presence of saquatches were heard during the trip. On one of the nights, Kirk decided he was going to use his H-Series FLIR thermal imager to monitor some outlying tents near their camp in the case of a nocturnal visit by a bigfoot. Before setting up the gear, he took a few looks around camp. One of the sweeps of the outlying area showed what Kirk initially thought was a stump or some other inanimate object. Though the figure didn’t seem to be moving, he zoomed in on the figure for a closer look for a second video. Finally, a third video of the object was obtained from a slightly different position, about twenty feet closer than the first two clips.

This is a frame from the Brown Thermal Footage
with the contrast and brightness enhanced.
The polarity has been reversed, so black is hot.

On May 8, 2012, a very interesting piece of thermal footage was obtained by Stacy Brown Sr. in Florida. His son, Stacy Brown Jr., contacted me a while back to ask for my help with trying to authenticate the footage. Knowing that no footage can ever be proven to be a bigfoot beyond a doubt (some folks still doubt the Patterson/Gimlin Film, after all) I set about trying to extract as much information out of the clip as possible. Perhaps some of this information could shed some light on whether or not the clip could even be considered as real. Below are my thoughts and conclusions on this remarkable piece of footage.

The Brown Footage

This interesting clip of video was obtained by a father and son team from Florida on May 8, 2012, sometime between midnight and 1 am. Stacy Brown Sr. and Jr. are the minds behind the website, The Sasquatch Hunters. The two men were bigfooting somewhere on the panhandle of Florida around the town of Quincy on the night they got their footage. The exact location is between the property where the Bridges have their ongoing encounters, and where I recorded a “whoop” vocalization last year.

The night the two men were camping, they tried a passive approach by simply having a campfire and playing loud music on a stereo. Every once in a while the duo would go for walks without using any lights. No other campers or people of any sort were ever observed on that night, and both witnesses are sure they were the only people present.

Stacy Brown Sr. was armed with a FLIR Scout thermal imager with which he was continually scanning the nearby woods. He had the polarity switched on the FLIR, so that the warm things in the viewfinder appeared black as opposed to the more commonly used white.

At some point in the evening, they heard some knocks, so they walked in that direction. Every time they heard noises, it seemed like it was just a little bit ahead of them, no matter how far they went. Stacy Sr. then saw a heat signature from behind some trees a little ways off into the palmettos. Whatever it was stepped briefly out into the open. What Stacy Sr. saw was a large, man-shaped figure take one long step and disappear into the brush. He turned to his son who had not seen the figure at all and said, “We gotta go.”

“Patty”
It is once again St. Patty’s day, named after the bigfoot filmed 45 years ago today.  I know that this film has played a huge role in many a bigfooter’s life, including my own, so it seems appropriate to pause for a moment and show some gratitude to Roger Patterson, Bob Gimlin, and Patty herself for converging on Bluff Creek that day.
A lot of excellent work has been done in recent years to validate the film.  Most notable, in my opinion, is the work done by Bill Munns.  Along with Mr. Munns, Steven Streufert and Robert Leiterman have put in quite a bit of effort to properly document the exact location of the film site that was until recently lost to time.
I had the opportunity to go to the PG film site this past summer with Bill Munns, Steven Streufert, Robert Leiterman, and a host of other bigfooters.  In honor of the film, I will post some of the photos taken on this trip. Enjoy!

Fox News in North Carolina recently paid colleague and friend of the ‘squatch, Mike Greene, a visit.  They were largely interested in the thermal footage that likely shows a sasquatch that Mike obtained in 2009.

N.C. Man Claims He Has Picture of Bigfoot

ASHEBORO, N.C. (WGHP) —

A man that once worked as a fraud investigator claims he has captured an image of North American folklore.

Mike Greene, a former chief of fraud investigation in New Jersey, claims he captured video of Bigfoot in the Uwharrie National Forest over a year ago.

“In the middle of the night, I was awakened by what I call, ‘Darth Vader’ breaths,” said Greene. Greene said he was able to capture a thermal image of Sasquatch that night.

“The image is the first comprehensive thermal image of a Sasquatch… even though I admit that it’s blurry,” said Greene.

In the video, Greene claims you can see a big creature come out of the woods and grab a candy bar that was set up to attract the Sasquatch.

“It can’t be anything else, I mean, it literally can’t be anything else,” said Greene.

Greene said many people have said the image is just a guy in a fat suit or gorilla suit, but he claims the thermal image proves it’s something different.

“The heat signature – which is what you’re looking at…the heat signature would be completely different. It would be splotchy,” said Greene. “You could put a guy in a Bigfoot costume and fool night vision, because that’s just like a video camera. But if you put a thermal image on him, that’s going to look completely different.”

After seeing the video, Greene was convinced he had captured video of the much-discussed creature Bigfoot.

“Yeah, there’s no doubt about it,” said Greene.

Greene admits that he, and the rest of the Bigfoot Field Researchers Organization, are surprised there has not been better proof after several years of searching and many attempts to get a glimpse of the evasive alleged creature.

“We have, in the organization, maybe 200 game cams out looking for Sasquatches. We haven’t got one lousy picture of a Sasquatch, which doesn’t make any sense, unless you think that maybe these things are so smart that they either see the game cam,” said Greene.

Greene said there is no doubt he caught one of the rare images of the increasingly evasive creature.

“Clear as a bell, absolutely unequivocally, no doubt what it was – to me, anyway,” said Greene.

A majority of scientists discount the existence of Bigfoot and consider it to be a combination of folklore, misidentification, and hoax, rather than a legitimate animal, in part because some estimate large numbers necessary to maintain a breeding population.

Greene said fossils of a sasquatch-like creature have been unearthed in China. He claims the creature came over the land bridge that used to exist between Asia and Alaska..
