Texas Bigfoot Conference

After all these years, I’m finally making my way to the Texas Bigfoot Conference in Jefferson, TX.  This is one of the original conferences that’s been going on strong for well over a decade.  To add to the festivities, this year is the 50th anniversary of the Patterson/Gimlin Film, so there will be special presentations on just this topic, along with a full schedule of presentations on a variety of research by some of the best in the field.

I will be giving two presentations at this conference: one on Friday night specifically on the Patterson/Gimlin Film, and then another on Saturday covering a topic of my choice.  Loren Coleman has the honor of being the keynote speaker at the event, and will also give a presentation specifically on the PG Film.

For tickets, click this link.  Be sure to check out the conference’s Facebook page for updates as things progress!  And, as always, I hope to see you there!

Hocking Hills Bigfoot Conference

For the second year running, I have been invited to present at the Hocking Hills Bigfoot Conference in southeast Ohio.  Presenting at the same event will be Sybilla Irwin, Bill Dranginis, and Marc DeWerth.

The Hocking Hills Bigfoot Conference is a different kind of event.  It is held at a small venue with rustic cabins and camping arrangements.  The crowds are small, and the opportunities to interact with investigators, witnesses and aficionados is great.  It is indeed a unique and intimate event.

The conference is held at Camp Oty’Okwa near South Bloomingville, OH nestled into the rugged woods of the Hocking Hills.  The are has a long history of sightings, and some excellent evidence from the area will be presented.  The Camp’s website describes the setting as follows:

Where Bigfoot Walks: Crossing the Dark Divide
By Dr. Robert Pyle

One of my favorite bigfoot books (and one that has been on my list of excellent additions to any bigfoot library for a long time) has been reprinted this year with a new chapter!  The butterfly specialist and wordsmith, Dr. Robert Pyle, has updated his classic tome, Where Bigfoot Walks: Crossing the Dark Divide.

This isn’t your average bigfoot book in that it isn’t full of sighting reports and evidence supporting the existence of an undiscovered hominoid species.  This book is from the perspective of an educated, open-minded skeptic who takes a personal journey into the mystery (which is more than most skeptics do).  His knowledge of the terrain and environment of the Dark Divide, an area deep in Gifford Pinchot National Forest, comes forth in his writing, as does his appreciation of the natural beauty of the area.

This book doesn’t necessarily persuade the reader that bigfoot is real, but it does something equally important.  It persuades the reader that the possibility exists, and this is often the first step into a larger world for the uninformed on the subject.  Dr. Pyle takes you on his journey with him, and shows that the mystery itself is a valuable thing for us all.  The quest is worth the journey, though the final destination of that quest is uncertain.

And, as an added bonus, the newest edition includes a few words from yours truly as well.

I will be making an appearance in White Salmon, WA with Dr. Pyle on October 28th where he will be doing a reading from his book.  If you haven’t had a chance to meet Dr. Pyle, you really should make an effort to do so.  His thoughtful perspective on the subject is a delight to hear, to say the very least.

Sasquatch Nest eDNA Study

Big news on the science front is just emerging, and you can be a part of it.  But first, let me give you a little background.

If you haven’t yet heard, some very peculiar nests which very well might have been made by the local sasquatches in the area have been found on the Olympic Peninsula in Washington.  Over twenty nests have now been discovered in an area not larger than one square mile.  The site, which is off-limits to the general public, has been under observation for two years by some of the top researchers from the Olympic Project.  I will leave it to them to eventually publish the findings and results of their study at a future time.  For now, just know that this is going on, and has been for a couple years now.

I have personally seen the nests, and I am very impressed by them.  I will go on record as saying that I believe sasquatches made them.  They were constructed by twisting and breaking off branches from the surrounding huckleberry bushes which grow up to 8 feet tall in the area.  The branches were brought to the nest locations and seemingly woven in an intentional shape that most resembles the ground nests of gorillas.  The only other contender for possibly having made the nests would be a black bear, but a biologist who saw the nests noted that if this is black bear behavior, it is undocumented black bear behavior.  Nothing like this has been seen before by anyone involved.

Recently, Dr. Jeff Meldrum was taken to the nest site area and shown a number of the nest structures.  He took core samples from a number of the nests and will now attempt to get an environmental DNA analysis, or eDNA study, done on them.

Environmental DNA, also known as eDNA, is a way to get DNA from the environment, hence the name.  This means that samples can be taken of dirt from the floor of caves, feeding sites, nests, or other locations where an animal is known to have been and tested for residual DNA, thus proving their presence.  This technique has already been used to obtain DNA from a variety of animal species, including extinct species such as Neanderthals and Denisovans, both extinct hominins (or thought to be extinct) closely related to humans.  Click here to read about these remarkable finds.

EDNA testing is pretty expensive, though, and that’s where we come in.  Dr. Meldrum has started a crowd-funding effort to raise the money to get the samples tested.  This is something we can all do together as a community to help provide solid, verifiable, scientific evidence for the existence of sasquatches.  No donation is too small, and every dollar counts.  I have donated, and I recommend you do too.  Please share the link widely, post it on your social media accounts, and be loud and proud that you are helping to possibly solve the mystery of bigfoot.  Click this link to participate in the fund raising campaign to prove bigfoot is real by eDNA analysis.

Sure, there is a chance that these are not nests made by sasquatches.  Perhaps this will be another dead end, like so many efforts that have come before.  But, think about it…  How would you feel if this proves bigfoot is real and you didn’t donate even a dollar?  This is an opportunity to participate in what could be the biggest scientific discovery of the new century.  It’s worth a buck.  Do it.

5/31/17 Road Crossing Near Morton, WA

The location where a sasquatch was observed running across the road near Morton, WA

At 2:40 pm on Wednesday, May 31, 2017 a security guard (who will remain anonymous) was traveling north on Highway  7 out of Morton, WA.  As he passed a clear cut on his left, he saw a huge hairy figure run bipedally from left to right across the road in front of him, seemingly from the trees bordering the clear cut into the heavy brush on the right side of the road.  The figure was immediately recognized as a sasquatch because of the figure’s size, and its speed.  The sasquatch crossed between one and two hundred feet ahead of him, and it was already in the road when the witness first noticed it.

The witness was in his patrol car with his K9 police dog companion at the time of the sighting.  He slowed down where the figure disappeared into the brush on the right side of the road in order to see if he could catch another glimpse of the creature, but he saw nothing.  His dog, however, immediately “went stupid barking and bouncing around in his crate” as they slowly drove through the area where the bigfoot crossed.

In an email, the witness wrote, “There is absolutely no mistaking what I saw.  Full daylight and 150-200 feet directly in front of me.  The animal was 8 to 10 feet tall with dirty blonde colored fur with a white or lighter colored stomach.”  He went on to say there was no way it was a man in a suit because of the size and speed.  He was also willing to take a polygraph test to verify his story.

I received his email on June 2nd and immediately called the witness.  I was already familiar with the Morton area from having been on several expeditions nearby, and even obtaining an interesting sound recording there.

We arranged a meeting for that very evening at 6 pm in Morton, WA.  I wanted to get on the scene as soon as possible in case footprints or other spoor were still there.  The weather had been good, so there was a good chance that something might be located.

I met the witness and his sixth grade daughter at the scene and he retold his account to me on camera.  Concerned about his employment, I assured the witness his identity would not be made public by me.  I will only make this recording public with his explicit permission, an agreement I make with all my witnesses.

We looked around for several hours for footprints or sign of the sasquatch’s passing.  Since the witness was unsure as to exactly where the bigfoot ran out or into the woods, it was very difficult to locate anything.  A one hundred yard stretch of woods is a huge area to search, and two days had passed allowing the grass and other plants to stand up straight again, functionally erasing any sign of the bigfoot’s passing.  I did find numerous animal trails, complete with deer and elk prints, but no definitive signs of the sasquatch.

I found the witness to be fully believable.  His daughter shared with me how excited her father was when he shared the story with her over the phone on the same evening he saw the sasquatch.  He spent his own time and money to drive out to the location from his home near Tacoma, WA immediately after picking his daughter up from school.  He wore his uniform to the site, complete with side arm and badge, and he brought his K9 unit out to sniff around as well.  He didn’t believe nor disbelieve in sasquatches before his sighting, but now is very interested in the subject and has started asking his friends and looking online for more information.

If you have any information about sasquatches in the Morton, WA area, or anywhere else for that matter, please contact me and share what you know.

Pre-1958 “Bigfoot” Reference

History  Comments Off on Pre-1958 “Bigfoot” Reference

As every bigfooter probably knows, the word “bigfoot” was coined by Jerry Crew and his road building employees back in 1958 when they started finding large footprints going across the freshly torn up road they were building the day before.  Jerry and his crew were puzzled by these prints (though the Yurok natives on the crew knew what was responsible for them and started leaving the job because of it), so he consulted his taxidermist friend, Bob Titmus, who gave him plaster and directions on how to cast the footprints.  Jerry made a cast and brought it to the local paper in Eureka, and soon a newspaper story was written.  The story then spread on the AP news wire, and viola!  America had a name for that hairy biped that had been seen all over the country: “Bigfoot.”

Of course, the creatures called bigfoot weren’t invented in 1958.  Hairy wildmen have been reported in North America for as long as there have been people there.  The wildmen just weren’t called “bigfoot” yet.  The word, “bigfoot,” was first used to publicly refer to sasquatches in 1958 when Jerry made those casts and brought one to the paper.

I had always thought that “bigfoot” was the term used solely because the footprints that Jerry Crew and his men found were big.  That seemed simple enough, and there was never any good reason to question that assumption…  Until now.  There might have been another influence on Jerry’s choice of names.

Recently, I received an email from a woman named MaryAnn with a link to an episode from the 1950’s western, Death Valley Days.  The episode’s title was “Mr. Bigfoot.”  The episode is copyrighted 1956, two full years before Jerry named the creature that was making those big footprints.

Scroll to the bottom of this article to watch the full episode of “Mr. Bigfoot” from the series, “Death Valley Days.”

The episode is as corny as one would expect television to be in the mid 1950’s, and it made me smirk a number of times.  At around the 25 minute mark in the episode, Professor Muchmore starts talking about “Mr. Bigfoot.”  Muchmore explains that huge footprints measuring 18 inches long were occasionally found in the Owens Valley just west of Death Valley back in the 1860’s.  The footprints were six inches across the toes, and the stride was seven feet long when the creature was walking.  Sound familiar?

In the end, the tracks end up being a vehicle for the Professor to play Cupid, and much of what he told the protagonist about those footprints is never explained nor expanded upon.  But still, the size of the footprints, the stride, and the fact that the local Indians had a name for the creature all ring true with what we now think of as “bigfoot.”

The details and possible implications of this episode are interesting to ponder.  I wonder if the episode’s writer had some knowledge of large footprints.  Did some other person, perhaps a resident of the Owens Valley, observe footprints of this size and tell the episode’s producers or writers about it?  The Owens Valley would be a likely place for a sasquatch to live.  There are bigfoot reports to this day in the Owens Valley.  At one time it would have been even better bigfoot habitat, especially back in the 1860s when the footprints were supposedly found in this fictional story, when the valley was more lush

Sasquatch Multi Tool

Being a fan of all things sasquatch, as well as cool gadgets and tools, I had to tell you all about this little gem.  While I wouldn’t want this to be my only multi tool in a survival situation (I prefer a good bushcraft knife), it would serve you well in most other camping situations.

This bigfoot tool contains the following uses, though the creative (or hard-pressed) could figure out several others, I’m sure:

  • A – Hex wrenches.
  • B – Bottle opener.
  • C – Cord cuter.
  • D – 1″ Ruler. E – Flathead screwdriver.
  • F – Phillips head screwdriver.
  • G – Butterfly wrench. H – Can opener

A new bigfoot movie has just been realeased called Territorial Behavior. Directed by Peter Bergin, it seems to be an interesting combination of a tale of survival and and bigfoot lore.

I have only seen a few clips shared with me by Peter, but I like what I’ve seen so far!  A particularly cool scene is when a bigfoot pushes its face into the walls of a tent from the outside.  Creepy stuff, if you ask me, yet something we’ve all been asking and hoping for.

Territorial Behavior

The title is available on Amazon starting today, February 28th, 2017.  For more information, visit the film’s Facebook page.  Click in the picture or title immediately above to be the first in your squatching circles to own this film on DVD or Blue Ray!

Senate Bill to Make Sasquatch the Official WA State Cryptid

WA official state cryptid: Sasquatch!

Washington moves to make sasquatch the state’s official cryptid!

Sasquatch is everywhere nowadays, and I’m not just talking about in the woods.  You can see sasquatches on billboards, commercials, and everybody’s favorite reality TV series.  Strangely enough, though, there is not a single mention of the creatures in the state laws of Washington despite the tourism dollars brought there by the hairy hominoid (though there are a couple local ordinances).  That might be about to change.

Senator Ann Rivers who represents the 18th Legislative District in Washington has proposed a bill to make sasquatch the official state “cryptid,” or undiscovered animal.  This was brought on by a letter from “Caleb,” a boy who lives in her district.

Some might complain that this sort of thing doesn’t belong in the solemn halls of legislative government, but I would strongly suggest otherwise.  A very large sum of money is spent in Washington every year by bigfooters coming to conferences, paying for campsites, buying gasoline, buying souvenirs, and going on paid expeditions looking for evidence of sasquatches.  These bigfooters therefore use the public lands set aside by the state, thus ensuring their protection for future generations.  Clearly, bigfoots have played a small yet significant role in Washington’s tourism and public lands.

I predict that as bigfoots become more prominent in the minds of the public, and especially after academic acceptance of the species, they will play a huge economic role in Washington and other states.  How will they be protected?  What, if any, rights will they be granted to ensure their safety and autonomy?  Will they be viewed as threats or assets?  How will our own views of the lands they live on be changed?  All these questions and more will surface, so it’s a good thing to put sasquatches on the minds of Washingtonians now, before they are proven as a real species, so some of these questions can be pondered before answers are demanded.

Bigfoot Lying on Hwy 299 – July 14, 2016 Sighting

California, Encounters, Sighting reports  Comments Off on Bigfoot Lying on Hwy 299 – July 14, 2016 Sighting

Bigfoot lying in Hwy 299 west of Del Loma, CA.

A witness named Jeremy (last name withheld) recently submitted an interesting bigfoot sighting report from California to my online sighting report form.

On July 14, 2016, a man in his mid-sixties was driving west on Highway 299 at approximately 3 am on his way to Crescent City, CA.  He was travelling quite fast, upwards towards 75 mpg on the twisty, dark road.  Somewhere shortly after Del Loma, but before Hwy 299 crosses to the south side of the Trinity River, the man accelerated out of a right curve the man swerved into the oncoming lane in order to avoid hitting a huge object laying smack in the middle of his lane and partially in the left lane as well.  The witness observed the object as best he could while his headlights swept across the figure lying a full six feet across the lane.

Highwy 299 just west of Del Loma, CA

The witness described what he saw as black, but not shiny black.  His first thought was that it was a very large tire from a front end loader lying in the lane, but there were no treads on it and it was one uniform color from one end to the other.  It was very large, being almost as high as the hood of his Toyota Prius.  The witness then realized that he saw from the shoulders to the buttocks of a large figure lying in the fetal position across the lane.

Lying fetal in the middle of the road seems like a strange thing for a bigfoot to be doing, but this behavior is not unprecedented in bigfoot reports.  Charlie Raymond from the Kentucky Bigfoot Research Organization recently shared a presentation in which he details several reports of just this behavior from other credible witnesses.  Remembering this, I contacted Charlie and he was generous enough to do a follow up interview with the witness.  Below are excerpts from his notes with the witness’ name removed.

I called the witness and left a message. The witness promptly returned my call. It was immediately apparent the witness was excited, highly intelligent and very articulate. He’s an ex-Army helicopter pilot and has been a special education teacher for 26 years.  I asked him if it could have possibly been a black bear hit by a car?  He adamantly denied it by saying, “This was much too wide at the shoulders and much too huge to have been a bear!  From its shoulders to hips was at least 5-6 feet, not including the neck, head or legs!  I have 20/20 vision. After passing the creature, I was totally flabbergasted…stunned!”

Because the witness was in rush to reach his destination, he was travelling close to 75 mph.  As he entered a long curve, the creature was ‘already’ in the fetal position. It never moved a muscle. The witness swerved to his left into the oncoming lane just in time to miss it, coming within 2-3 feet from its shoulders. The witness estimated the shoulders at about 30” in height, which was the same height as the hood of his car. It had solid black hair.  When I asked him how long was the hair, he said, “I don’t recall.  All I know, it was uniform in color from its shoulders to its hips.”  He added, “The shoulders and hips were more rounded, not squared-off like a huge tractor tire and no noticeable tread. It definitely had black hair. This was no doubt an animal. The shoulders were much wider than the hips.”

In regard to it lying in the fetal position on the road:

This rather peculiar behavior happens more often than one would think. In some cases, it’s in the cold winter on an isolated country road. In that case, perhaps the Bigfoot was benefiting from the warm road?  In the above case, something else seemed to have caused this behavior because it occurred in July.

Here are some related encounters involving Bigfoots lying in the road.

  • Kentucky Bigfoot Research Organization report of an elderly woman driving up on a Bigfoot lying in the middle of the road.
  • BFRO report of witnesses coming upon TWO Bigfoots lying in the middle of the road. It also mentions how quick the one creature sprang up from its lying down position.
  • BFRO report of a Bigfoot standing in the middle of the road, then laying down in front of the approaching car.
  • Oregon-Bigfoot story of a car coming upon a Bigfoot sitting in the middle of the road.
  • Oregon-Bigfoot report where a truck driver comes upon a Bigfoot lying in the center of the road. Read his description of it….“in a fetal position, lying with its back to him.”
  • Weird-USA reports someone coming across a Bigfoot lying in the road.

Follow up report by Charlie Raymond, Kentucky Bigfoot Research Organization

A huge thanks to Charlie Raymond for following up with the witness, and to Terry Thomas for an excellent artist recreation of what the witness reported!
